As creators, we mostly explore from our own perspectives and interests, which is what Christopher Nolan does in his work. But this is also why it's SO important that LOTS of different types of people are creating, and why we need more women directors and people of color directing and especially women of color directing.

Completely agree. I have this strange miracle of my younger daughter being into film (she even volunteers for our local film festival), and she's really into new, younger directors, many of them women and/or non-white, and it's just been a joy to experience. She's the one who introduced me to Greta Gerwig's work via via Francis Ha and Booksmart. I mean, incredible. I absolutely love Nolan's work, but I'm 100% on board with what you say here. I've always done this with literature (I'm a lit prof; Octavia Butler is my fave), but translating more to film is something I needed to do for sure.

Your daughter's smart! :) Greta Gerwig's work is really great. And thumbs up for Octavia Butler too. People being more open to branching out is needed and -- I'm happy to say -- happening. But the film and publishing industries need to continue to put this work out there. I really hope they do.

All of this, but especially Florence Pugh.
